    Cat tongues are unique in that they are covered in small spines called papillae. These papillae work like a comb to help cats groom themselves. They also help to spread saliva across a cat’s fur, which helps to keep their coat clean and healthy. Interestingly, a cat’s tongue is also rough, which allows them to easily remove dirt and debris from their fur.

This is thanks to their large pupils and special reflective layer at the back of their eyes called the tapetum lucidum. It’s what gives their eyes that eerie glow in the dark. But despite their impressive night vision, cats can still struggle to see in total darkness, as they rely on at least a small amount of light to activate their sensitive retinas.
